大阪新刀の名工「助廣」の見事な涛瀾刃
(とうらんば)
The noted swordsmith "Sukehiro" of the Ōsaka Shin-tō forged this sword.
A tempered line is a brilliant Tōran pattern.
The metal carving also of the cherry blossoms of a knot loop
was carried out, and the pattern has emerged more vividly.
This knot loop is not visible to a casting article. |

九四・九八式軍刀外装の標準は、黄銅に銅鍍金、金小縁、柄糸・鞘は茶褐色となっていた。
制式金具は真鍮の量産鋳造品であり、外装会社の工員(含、女子工員)の手で調色加工が施されて
製品となった。
刀装具専門職人が丁寧に手作りした古の刀装具と品格は比べるべくも無い。
標準外装に満足しない高級将校や資力のある将校は、制式外装の形態を保ちながら、金具調
色・柄糸・鞘素材や塗色に好みの注文をつけ、美的にも満足のいく特別外装を造らせた。
この軍刀所蔵者は、著名な一流彫金技術者の方である。
プロとしての観点から、当時の金具の粗雑さに「命を賭ける将兵にこの様な外装品質の軍刀し
か提供出来なかったのか・・・」と技術者としての義憤を感じられた。
そもそも彫金技術の起源は、平安期の刀剣装具が原点である。
こうした思いから、量産金具に独自の審美眼で彫金技術を付加され、金具色上げと配色も新た
に見直された。
本職の鞘師、色上げ(鍍金)技術者と協業され、数年をかけて修復(新造)された軍刀外装がこの
「平成に蘇る九八式軍刀」である。
専門技術者・職人が量産制式外装に手を加えると、美術工芸外装と見紛う品位に変貌するとい
う例である。

量産金具が古来の手作り工芸品のような仕上がりとなっている。鍔と金具は全て銀厚メッキの古美仕上げ。並品猿手の桜花葉も彫金
が施され高級猿手に生まれ変わった。
Advanced metal carving technology was added to mass-production
parts, and metal fittings were finished like a handmade handicraft from
ancient times. All the metal fittings are thick silver plating, and are
old silver finish.

The standard color of the mounting of Type 94 and Type 98 Guntō
was based on blackish brown.
The metal fittings of a formality are the mass-production casting
articles of a brass, and were colored by the operative of the mounting
company. The dignity of the Guntō mounting was poor compared with the
sword decoration carefully made by the craftsman of the traditional
speciality.
The officers with the brass and braid or funds who is not
satisfied with a standard mounting, supplied the favorite special
mounting for mixing colors and the material of the mounting,
maintaining the form of a formality mounting.
This Guntō possession person is a prominent first-class metal
carving engineer. He was sad about the carelessness of a Guntō mounting from a viewpoint as a specialist, and he felt righteous
indignation for "the situation where such a poor Guntō was given to the
soldiers who risk their life."
First of all, the origin of metal carving technology starts in
the sword decoration of the Heian period.
From such a thought, he added metal carving technology original
with mass-production metal fittings, and also newly improved the color
scheme of metal fittings.
He performed refurbishing operation over the time for two years
with special Sayashi and a plating engineer.
This is "Type 98 Guntō who revives in Heisei."
When a special engineer and craftsman modify a mass-production
Formality mounting, it is the example of changing into the grace taken
for artistic handicraft.
